Choosing the right spill containment solution doesn’t have to be complicated
When you’re working with fuel, chemicals or other hazardous liquids, spill containment is part of everyday operations. Permanent bunding is ideal for fixed facilities, but when you need something portable, quick to deploy and easy to store, a collapsible bund is often the best option.
SpillPro also supplies permanent bunding, drive over bunding and bunded pallets for sites that need fixed or container-specific solutions. Collapsible bunds simply add flexibility, giving you a practical way to contain spills wherever and whenever they occur.
1. Size and capacity
Collapsible bunds are available in a range of sizes, from compact footprints for drums and small machinery to large formats that can contain trucks, IBCs or tanks. Before choosing, consider the largest piece of equipment or container you will need to place inside.
In Australia, bunding capacity must be at least 110% of the largest container stored, or 25% of the total volume stored on the bund — whichever is greater. Keeping this in mind will help ensure your site remains compliant, and we can help you get the right bund for your needs.
2. Wall height
Bund wall heights typically range between 0.3m and 0.6m. Lower walls allow for easier access to move equipment or containers in and out, while higher walls provide greater spill capacity. The right choice depends on whether ease of use or maximum containment is more important for your operation.
3. Material and durability
High-performance fabrics like XR5 are designed to resist oils, fuels and a wide range of chemicals. They are also tough enough for rough conditions on mine sites or transport depots. If your bund will be used outdoors, look for UV-resistant materials that can withstand weather extremes.
4. Draining and decanting
Many collapsible bunds include capped camlock outlets. These make it simple and safe to drain or decant captured liquids for compliant disposal. If regular draining is part of your operations, this feature can save time and reduce handling risks.
5. Portability and storage
One of the main advantages of collapsible bunds is that they fold down into a compact transport bag. If you need bunds on standby for emergency response, or if your team works across multiple sites, portability should be a key part of your selection.
Quick checklist: choosing your collapsible bund
- What is the largest container or vehicle you need to contain?
- Does the bund meet Australian capacity requirements (at least 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total volume stored, whichever is greater)?
- Do you need low walls for easier access, or higher walls for maximum capacity?
- Will the bund be exposed to chemicals, fuels or harsh conditions?
- Is quick draining or decanting required?
- Does your team need to move or store the bund frequently?
